Meet the Architect: Lifehaus Passive House with Nizar Haddad

The Circular Economy & Eco Design

Nizar Haddad

Nizar Haddad, holder of a specialized graduate degree in architecture from the Academie Libanaise des Beaux Arts (ALBA) with a fully passive self-sufficient Penitentiary center as a graduate project founded NH-Architectes in 2011. The son of Georges Haddad, a veteran Lebanese architect renowned for being among the pioneers who introduced modern architecture to Lebanon; he hopes to use the knowledge passed down to him in a bid to bridge the divide between modern man and nature in terms of his designs. Nizar's evolving vision of architecture and his passion for nature are what have fashioned the guidelines adopted by NH-Architectes. His interest in green architecture, stemming from his respect for the natural world, grew to include techniques that promote a sustainable, self-sufficient dwelling. He committed much of his time to researching the subject, until this interest blossomed into a full-fledged passion. Nizar decided to develop the LIFEHAUS while revisiting and applying multiple long forgotten ancestral building methods and employing the knowledge of these masters to produce the most optimal, ecological, self-sufficient and economical prototype. In 2014, Nizar decided to build the first prototype in his land in Baskinta. Its concept was clearly based on passive fully self-sufficiency with minimum cost and carbon footprint, using recycled and local natural materials, and reviving ancestral techniques. In 2017 LIFEHAUS was born…

Seminar Content

CE06

As a first self-sustainable house, we’re going to tackle the different systems that makes it passive and self-sufficient (such as the Canadian well, thermal mass storage, natural and reused material, water management, solar power etc.), and how this kind of design re-questions the conventional construction industry and modifies its process.

Our case study and discussion will also include:

__• Why conventional construction industry is bad for the environment.

__• Tackling the legal and financial aspects (permit, green-loan).

__• Discussion about the architectural, on site and human challenges.

As a first experience of its kind, lots of volunteers participated in the construction of the Lifehaus, and we’re going to talk about the pros and cons of such interventions and its community aspect.
